Orphan Bear Rescue Centre

Orphan Bear Rescue Centre

The Orphan Bear Rescue Centre (OBRC) in Russia rescues and rehabilitates orphan brown bear cubs, and cares for them until they are old enough to be released back into the wild.

The bears come to the Centre at a very young age. Many are orphaned due to illegal hunting, but also logging and natural disasters which displace the bears and cause mothers and cubs to be separated. Sometimes, if a cub is weak or sick when they leave the den, they fall behind their mother and get lost or are abandoned. Unable to survive on their own at such a young age, the OBRC takes in the cubs and cares for them until they are old enough to be returned to the wild.

Between 1995 and 2017, the Centre rescued 235 bear cubs. The cubs are given expert care and when they are old enough they are introduced to large natural enclosures. When they are the right age, weight and have learnt how to forage, they are released back into the wild as close as possible to where they were found. Born Free will be supporting the Orphan Bear Rescue Centre in 2019.
